meditations in an emergency

Meditations In An Emergency, 2012, Series of 9 photographs, 60 x 45 cm each, Inkjet-prints

The photos were taken in the artist's immediate environment in Zurich and examine the surface changes of a city in transition. The gentrification process taking place has brought along a shift in materials, which has changed city’s actual surfaces and altered their meaning. The images depict the visual result of this process of formalization, commercialisation, and beautification of the city space.

City surfaces, ranging from common everyday materials to designed corporate or commercial surfaces, define the content of the work. The materials and surfaces themselves provide given sets of colours and structures that determine the aesthetics of the images. Photograpy becomes an act of re-appropriation of these urban spaces.

Questions about the nature of images come equally into play as the photographc observation of reality. The images explore the relationship between the acutal urban space and the space of the image, the material reality and the two dimensional illusion of the image, the gray zone between figuration and abstraction.
